Here are your options: Use protection – wear a condom or use another form of protection, take a risk of catching some lovely STI or don\u2019t have sex.<\/p>\n

Sex is meant to be fun, but it comes with a responsibility. You have a responsibility to yourself to try to keep healthy and safe. You have a further responsibility to sexual partners. Sex is intimate and there is an inherent trust there between those involved. This trust should be respected with honesty, an honesty that means you are not risking the health of others.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The one thing unquestionably as, or more, important than honesty and trust in sex is consent. Always ask for consent. If at any point you\u2019re told \u201cno\u201d or told to stop or your partners seem apprehensive, stop what you\u2019re doing immediately! If they seem apprehensive, ask them what\u2019s wrong, discuss it and if it\u2019s still something they don\u2019t seem willing to do, stay stopped. Never pressure a partner into something they\u2019re not comfortable with.<\/p>\n

In college we also still face the labels attached to sex. Women are prudes or sluts. Men are…well, what are men who don\u2019t have sex? What are men who have sex regularly with numerous partners? They\u2019re people and guess what, so are women. No one is a prude and no one is a slut simply because of their sexual choices.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Make no mistake, sex shaming is real and it\u2019s not just for those who have regular sex with numerous people. The label of virgin comes with bizarre connotations. Some will imagine a prudish religious fanatic when they hear someone is a virgin. Others will recoil in shock and horror. \u201cWhat!? You\u2019re in your twenties and you\u2019re a virgin!?\u201d<\/p>\n

Being a 23-year-old virgin, I\u2019ve been repeatedly on the receiving end of shock when I calmly say I\u2019m a virgin and I\u2019m pretty ok with that. In some cases there\u2019s an implicit pressure in the response.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A typical conversation with a potential partner will usually reach a point where I\u2019m asked if I want to do something sexual, to which I eventually reply that I\u2019ve yet to rip off the \u201cv tag.\u201d Next comment is always, without fail, \u201cthat\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The problem with the comment is that it implies permission from the other person. It\u2019s as though virgins are being told that they have permission from others to not be as sexually experienced as they might be. The tone is also usually one of pity with a hint of \u201cI\u2019ll fix that problem for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Having sex is not something to be \u201cfixed\u201d. Not having sex is also not something to be \u201cfixed\u201d. As long as a person is above the age of consent (that\u2019s 17, for anyone who doesn\u2019t know), giving free consent and not endangering others, there is nothing wrong with either sex or virginity.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also worth noting that virginity, especially for a man, is something very subjective. What makes someone a virgin? Related to that, what makes someone a \u201cslut\u201d? How much sex is \u201ctoo much\u201d? How little sex is \u201cnot enough\u201d?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The thing about sex, as with many other aspects of human life, is that it all comes down to personal choice. Have as much sex as you want as long as it\u2019s legal and consensual…and try to keep it safe – use protection.<\/p>\n

Sexual shame is one of Ireland\u2019s greatest shames as a nation. Be sex-positive and keep breaking down that wall of shame and we may yet become a far more mature society.<\/p>\n
