Elaine Byrne published a series of Tweets, which run under the hashtag #KerryBabies.<\/p>\n
They begin with the Tweet \u201cWhat happened to the Gardai who took Joanne Hayes’ false confession?\u201d<\/p>\n
Her first accusation is that \u201cSuperintendent John Courtney was promoted to Chief Superintendent (after a period of desk duty).\u201d<\/p>\n
Elaine also says that \u201cCourtney was involved in the interrogation of Christy Lynch in 1976. His conviction for murder – based on a false confession – was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1981.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Law Lecturer at IT Carlow also claims that \u201cSergeant Joseph Shelley was promoted to Superintendent (after a period of desk duty.)\u201d<\/p>\n
She goes on to say that \u201cShelly* took early retirement following the publication of the Morris tribunal report into Garda malpractice in Donegal. The Morris report sharply criticised Shelly\u2019s leadership as “prejudiced, tendentious and utterly negligent.”<\/p>\n

In another Tweet, Elaine states that \u201cDetective PJ Browne was promoted to Superintendent (after a period of desk duty).\u201d<\/p>\n
As well as saying that \u201c#KerryBabies was no obstacle to the advancement of the garda\u00ed involved, it seems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another Tweet reads \u201cDetective Gerry O\u2019Carroll was promoted to Detective Inspector. (after a period of desk duty).<\/p>\n
\u201cFour Gardai centrally involved in the #KerryBabies. All ultimately promoted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Elaine sums up her tweets by saying; \u201cNone of the 4 gardai ever apologised to Joanne Hayes. They were all promoted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spokesperson for An Garda Press Office, Colin Heeney, gave An Focal this reply to Elaine\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n
