Ten\u00a0female students were recently presented with bursaries from global healthcare company Johnson and Johnson (J&J) as part of its WiSTEM<\/span>2<\/span>D Award Programme.<\/span><\/p>\n

University of Limerick (UL) is one of 13 universities worldwide to participate in the WiSTEM<\/span>2<\/span>D\u00a0(Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Manufacturing and Design) programme.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA key aim of the WiSTEM<\/span>2<\/span>D programme is to inspire young women to bring diversity of ideas and opinions to typically male-dominated STEM careers,\u201d director of EPI*STEM at the National Centre of STEM Education Professor Merrilyn Goos said. <\/span><\/p>\n

Recent research conducted amongst UL STEM undergraduate students revealed that of the 56% of students that have never visited an industry facility, 66% were female, according to J&J.<\/span><\/p>\n

This scholarship allows recipients to meet women who work actively in the industry and garner practical experience through site tours, mentoring and career workshops.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ten winning students were:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Aisling Greaney, Biomedical Engineering, from Limerick City.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Alannah Aherne, Bioscience, from Ennis, Clare.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Cliodhna O\u2019Shea, Financial Maths, from Corbally, Limerick.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Ellen Liu, Aeronautical Engineering, from Castletroy, Limerick.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Fiona Neylon, Industrial Biochemistry, from Ennis, Clare.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Iva Gregovic, Design and Manufacturing Engineering, from Raheen, Limerick.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Jiale Ryan, Financial Maths, from Corbally, Limerick.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Maya Brennan, Product Design & Technology, from Castletroy, Limerick.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Niamh Munday, Product Design & Technology, from Enniskeane, Cork.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Siobh\u00e1n Regan, Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, from Moycullen, Galway.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Speaking on behalf of J&J, Head of External Affairs Anna Rafferty explains that the company remains \u201ccommitted to supporting women in STEM.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
