The much anticipated Six Nations kicks off this weekend. Grand Slam Champions Wales begin their defense of the tournament against Italy at home at 14:15 on Saturday. The other matches of the weekend pits Ireland against Scotland and the final game of the weekend is the mouth-watering tie of world cup runners up England travelling to France. Here I will profile each team including what their expectations are for the tournament and what players to look out for.<\/p>\nThe Six Nations begins tomorrow with Wales against Italy at 14.15<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Wales<\/strong><\/h2>\n
What to Expect: <\/em>They are the reigning champions and performed well in the World Cup. They have a settled team with some new names that we will surely see capped. I expect wins against the young French side and the Italians, and a massive performance against England in Twickenham in the penultimate round. Wales have been quietly consistent for the last few years and still have the same core team, so I would expect more of the same.<\/p>\n
Worth considering though, is that Gatland coached them for a really <\/em>long time. Wayne Pivac is another New Zealander and a former police officer. It will be interesting to see what he changes from Gatland\u2019s style. He coaxed the Scarlets into a Pro12 title in 2017, and they have been playing rapid and expansive rugby since he took over, which is really what Welsh fans want to see him bring to the national side.<\/p>\n
Who to watch out for:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
\n
Taulupe Faletau<\/strong> will make a triumphant return from injury.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n
Nick Tompkins<\/strong> is likely to make his debut, as Pivac didn\u2019t select many centres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Louis Rees-Zammit<\/strong> also, a Gloucester winger who is 18, looks about 15, and is a natural talent. Both Tompkins and Zammit chose to play for Wales over England, and are likely to debut this Six Nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nTaulupe Faleta is back from recovery after suffering two broken arms and a fractured bone collar.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
England<\/h2>\n
What to expect: <\/em><\/p>\n
As World Cup runners up and one of only two teams retaining their coach, England have a lot to live up to. They are favourites to win the tournament, and Paddy Power have them at 13\/8 to win a Grand Slam. There have been a couple of odd selection decisions, but following their massive World Cup, it is England\u2019s tournament to lose.<\/p>\n
Who to Watch out For:<\/em><\/p>\n

Ben Earl<\/strong> is stepping in at No.8, following Vunipola\u2019s injury, but he prefers playing flanker. Leaving behind in form regular No.8\u2019s Sam Simmonds and Alex Dombrandt is questionable, but Saracens Earl is diverse enough to fill in.<\/li>\n
Owen Farrell<\/strong>: It might be a weird tournament for Farrell, playing against an Ireland coached by his father. Will he finally get booked for a no arms high tackle? Nothing is impossible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nWill Farrell’s dad throw his performance?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
France<\/h2>\n
What to expect: <\/em><\/p>\n
They are introducing a lot of young players, to build up over the next few years before the 2023 World Cup, which they are hosting, but the prospects are already exciting. With the largest player base in Europe, and maybe finally some real organisation from new head coach Fabien Galthi\u00e9, they can finally become a formidable team with the flair and natural talent to rival the Southern Hemisphere teams. Whereas other Northern Hemisphere teams have employed Southern coaches to catch up with New Zealand and South Africa, France have the potential to do it all themselves.<\/p>\n
Who to watch out for:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A potential\u00a09,10,12 axis of Antoine Dupont<\/strong>, Louis Carbonel<\/strong> and Romain Ntamack<\/strong> is exciting and terrifying at the same time, particularly once they get some time playing together.<\/li>\n
\u00a0<\/strong>Gr\u00e9gory Alldrit<\/strong> and new captain Charles Ollivon<\/strong> in the back row…there is a lot to keep an eye on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nCharles Ollivon was named captain just ahead of the tournament<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Scotland<\/h2>\n
What to expect: <\/em><\/p>\n
Scotland are the other team that kept their old coach, for better or worse. With Ireland, Scotland and France all in transition, it could be Scotland\u2019s year to nab a few wins and finish in the top half of the table. On the other hand, they had a disappointing world cup and have looked fairly uninspired. I think it will be one of two extremes for the Scots this year, not in between.<\/p>\n
Who to watch out for:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Finn Russell<\/strong> is still an uncertainty, following a disagreement with Head Coach Gregor Townsend.<\/li>\n
Duncan Weir<\/strong> has been added to the squad as fly half back up. He doesn\u2019t have much on Russell in the way of flair, but he\u2019s a solid player that can make line breaks, and we might get to see him in a Scottish jersey for the first time in a while.<\/li>\n
George Horne<\/strong> is a huge attacking threat at scrum half, both he and Rory Hutchinson<\/strong> have been in form for their clubs, so expect them to be starting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nControversial Finn Russell is on uncertain ground<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Italy<\/h2>\n
What to expect: <\/em><\/p>\n
They put in a competitive performance against South Africa before a silly red card took them out of the game, Typhoon Hagibis also denied them a shot at the All Blacks, so they do have something to prove this year. Temporary South African coach Franco Smith has stepped into Conor O\u2019Shea\u2019s place. In theory, the temporary position could give him some freedom to try new things. With most of the other sides in a state of flux and refreshment, they could steal a couple of games this tournament.<\/p>\n
Who to watch out for:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Tommaso Allan<\/strong> and Ian McKinley<\/strong> are both class out-halves, and Italy have a back row to rival any team in the world in the steamrollers: Polledri, Steyn<\/strong> and Negri.<\/strong><\/li>\n
New captain Luca Bigi<\/strong> has the potential to become talismanic leader like Parisse, or captain Italy to another disappointing Six Nations finish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nLuca Bigi takes over from Sergio Parisse as Italy captain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Ireland<\/h2>\n
What to expect: <\/em><\/p>\n
I saved Ireland for last because we already know their starting XV and there is a bit more to talk about. I think everybody wants to see Ireland play more improvisational after Schmidt\u2019s conservative tactics, which worked for a while, but led to our downfall in the World Cup. Larmour being selected at full back with Cooney on the bench is the first inkling of that, but really, we have no idea what the team is going to play like under Farrell. It\u2019s an intelligent selection from him, keeping 9 to 13 pretty much the same and slowly introducing newer faces at 2, 8 and 15. He is keeping it familiar but fresh. I\u2019d expect a win against Scotland in this opening match.<\/p>\n
Who to watch out for:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
\n
Sexton<\/strong> is the key man and captain for this tournament, as usual. If he gets injured again, we will have the equally capable Ross Byrne or the exciting Billy Burns to step in.<\/li>\n
Caelan Doris<\/strong> is making his debut this weekend, a robust and talented Leinster back rower, fully deserving of the start. Expect to see his peer Max Deegan<\/strong> at some point in the tournament.<\/li>\n
You might have heard people going on about John Cooney<\/strong> as if he\u2019s the <\/em>answer. He\u2019s 29, just as old as Conor Murray, so he is not the long term answer, but he has been unstoppable for Ulster so far this season. We\u2019re certain to find out if he can bring this to the international level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
