Her early inspiration came from the pumpkins on her parent\u2019s large wholesale seed farm. Pumpkins would transform into a frequent symbol reoccurring throughout her body of work.<\/p>\n<p>At a young age, Kusama recalls feeling swamped by flowers and polka dots clouding her field of vision. These hallucinations inspired her art and multiple polka dots dominate her oeuvre.<\/p>\n<p>Kusama cites a troubling childhood as her main reason to retreat into her unique and obsessive art. Despite her mother\u2019s disapproval, she produced drawings from the life of on their farm as well as her hallucinations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23493\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23493\" style=\"width: 383px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-23493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/yayoifilm_1024x1024-300x199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/yayoifilm_1024x1024-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/yayoifilm_1024x1024-768x509.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/yayoifilm_1024x1024.jpeg 1023w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kusama in her 1967 film &#8216;Self-Obliteration&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She was fascinated with smooth white stones at a nearby river, which materialised as dots in her work.<\/p>\n<p>She remembers her childhood as being deeply unhappy, marked by a physically abusive father and an adulterer father.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother would force Kusama to spy on her father\u2019s affairs, resulting in the young artist despising male sexuality and instilling an intense fear of sex.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the consuming patterns of her hallucinations, Kusama titled her repetitive motifs as <em>self-obliteration<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The artist attended the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts and trained in traditional styles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23489\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/12-Narcissus-Garden-1966-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/12-Narcissus-Garden-1966-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/12-Narcissus-Garden-1966.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kusama in Narcissus Garden, 1966.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After an unsuccessful watercolour exhibition in 1952, Kusama began to take her inspiration from international artists as she fixated on American Abstract impressionism. Encouragement from Georgia O\u2019Keeffe motivated her to move to the States in 1958.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the ocean, she produced the<em> Infinity Nets<\/em> series, displaying her obsessively detailed repetitive designs and kickstarted the Minimalist movement. She came to public attention through her \u201chappenings\u201d where naked people were painted in polka dots.<\/p>\n<p>Kusama began to explore psychoanalysis that led to her making her visions of the anxiety-inducing phallus a reoccurring image she christened \u201caccumulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite not achieving commercial success, many male artists such as Andy Warhol ripped off Kusama\u2019s approach to art and this lack of recognition caused her to spiral into a deep depression.<\/p>\n<p>She became a patient at Seiwa Mental Hospital where she continues to live there to this day.<\/p>\n<p>It took a rediscovery of her work in 1989 by the Centre for International Contemporary Arts to revive interest in the artist\u2019s oeuvre, leading to her representing Japan in the Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n<p>Her bold, daring work finally received acclaim with Kusama ranking as the most successful living artist today and the most successful female artist of all time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23490 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/584707bbae7cd7a20fee0eb4c498745c-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/584707bbae7cd7a20fee0eb4c498745c-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/584707bbae7cd7a20fee0eb4c498745c.jpg 545w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23237 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/3-300x75.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/3-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/3-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/3-1536x384.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/3.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kusama\u2019s art is often interpreted as an expression of her obsessive anxieties. The bizarre and disturbing creation is interpreted as her struggles with despising sexuality and her mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23484 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/download-1-300x194.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/download-1-300x194.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/download-1-768x496.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/download-1.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anatomic Explosion on Wall Street (1968) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kusama was exploring performance art, labelling them as \u201chappenings\u201d Performers would dance nude to bongo drums, and Kusama painted herself in blue dots alongside the models while walking with them. This performance was to protest the Vietnam war. The protest was ended after 15 minutes, and the performance was marked by Kusama\u2019s open letter to Richard Nixon which included the quote \u201cyou can\u2019t eradicate violence by using more violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23485 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/download-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Obliteration Room (2002 to present) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The room begins as a blank canvas, resembling a domestic environment painted a sterile white. Visitors stick round stickers of various colours, shapes, and sizes and place them on the surface of their choice. This installation represents obsession and repetition to free herself from her mind\u2019s troubles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23486 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anfocal.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/download-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Infinity Mirrored Room- The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (2016)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The series that began in the 1960s has repetitive paintings and sculptures included into an immersive environment. This has a dark chamber lined with mirrors, with lights coming from small LED s hung from the ceiling pulsating electronic polka dots. The lights and mirrors create an endless space.
