The Regional Writing Centre (RWC) have announced ‘This Hostel Life’ by Melatu Uche Otorie as this year’s choice for the One Campus One Book initiative.

Next Wednesday (21st), Melatu Uche Okorie will read a short passage from ‘This Hostel Life’ and partake in a symposium with the audience in attendance at UL.

In semester two, she will return for an exclusive ‘How I Write, Ireland’ interview hosted by Lawrence Cleary.

The interview will delve into the particulars of Okorie’s writing process and examine the context and complexities of her novel.

Both events are open to all and free to attend.

This year’s selection explores issues linked closely to our country in recent decades.

It picks apart racism in everyday monotonous instances such as women queueing for basic supplies in a hostel as well as highlighting the injustices propounded by the direct provision system.

The One Campus One Book initiative convenes on an annual basis and is comprised of University of Limerick staff and students.

The initiative centres around a collective effort to unite through one book that is enjoyable and universally appropriate on campus.

The process of identification begins each summer in preparation for autumn’s selection.
