The National Student Media Awards will be held in person for the first time in three years following the easing of Coronavirus restrictions.

‘The Smedias’ are one of the biggest and longest running student journalism events in Ireland.

The awards event was held online in 2021. Despite the different setting, the event received over 1000 entries.

The in-person event will likely be held in the Aviva Stadium on Thursday 28th April, 2022.

There are 40 different categories covering areas from print to photography, blogging, radio, film, animation and more.

Mostafa Darwish, an ulumnus of University of Limerick and a recent graduate of the MA in Journalism programme won the Student Journalist of the Year at the awards last year.

Mr. Darwish won the coveted award for the second year in a row and now works as a professional journalist, with bylines in the Echo, Examiner and many more.

Applications open on March 1st and close on the 24th of March. The entry fee is €15 for the first entry and €10 for every subsequent entry.

A student who is interested in applying for a category can use any of their work from February 2021 up until the 24th March.

The entry will be viewed by a panel of judges made up of industry professionals. The Smedias are the perfect opportunity to get your work viewed and possibly end up on the shortlist for an award.
